Bacteriology of the tonsil core in recurrent tonsillitis and tonsillar hyperplasia: a literature review
Keywords:
recurrent tonsillitis, tonsillar hyperplasia, infection, bacteriaAbstract
In cases of recurrent tonsillitis, the core of the tonsils contains a wide variety of bacteria, including some pathogenic species that can be present in large quantities. The most commonly identified bacteria are Haemophilus influenzae, followed by Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pyogenes. Elevated concentrations of these bacteria within the tonsillar tissue are associated with clinical signs of infection and tonsillar enlargement. While Streptococcus pyogenes is a well-established cause of acute and epidemic tonsillitis, its role in recurrent and/or hyperplastic tonsillitis may warrant reconsideration.
