Abstract

This review analyses foreign and domestic publications of the last 15 years on the prevalence of otomycosis in children, its predisposing factors, clinical forms and course. According to the literature, otomycosis accounts for 9–30% of all cases of otitis externa, exceeding 50% in hot and humid regions, and in children its share among otitis of other aetiologies reaches 26.3%. The main risk factors are microtrauma of the external auditory canal skin, uncontrolled use of topical antibacterial and corticosteroid drops, water exposure, chronic suppurative otitis media and immunodeficiency. Clinically, the disease presents with itching, aural fullness, discharge and pain; middle-ear involvement is complicated by tympanic membrane perforation and conductive hearing loss. The review highlights the need for early detection and prevention of paediatric otomycosis with due regard to regional climatic conditions.
